opinionChinese expansion not for the faint of heart
Beginning of Story ContentYou might think that Stephen Paniccia made in the shade.
After only four years of being in business with his wife, Allyson, kiddy fashion accessories they sell have been spotted on the children of celebrities such as Jennifer Garner, Hugh Jackman and Alyson Hannigan.
"We had orders rose, Kevin Costner and Dennis Quaid," said Paniccia, who has established relationships with 100 distributors.
But suddenly, despite the star-studded clientele, his company was cut in half. Just 50 distributors now carry his line of ladybugs and lullabies.
"This is due to the slowdown in the U.S.," said Paniccia, who lives and runs his business from Cambridge, Ont. but also has a job in Toronto. "Our sales are telling us they have never seen that bad. They tell us to get money in advance before we ship all orders, because there are so many companies going under and not pay their bills. They are saying before shipping anything, make sure you get paid. "
Ladybugs and Lullabies sells hair clips, belts, bracelets, hats and pacifiers ("hip accessories for cool kids," as stated on the site. Paniccia always wanted to products "made in Canada."But now, to keep his business thriving, he contemplates what he would never consider: moving production to China.
"Retailers want cheap and cheerful," he explains. "This is what they want to offer their customers, especially now with the economy the way it is. This means that to have everything made in China as cheap as possible. We do not want to go this route, but there is a point where you sometimes have not, and we're almost there. Some of our competitors have. "
Paniccia As mentioned, I found myself recalling a story that we produced for Venture, on Radio-Canada magazine for long-term contractors.Back in 2004, we followed a Vancouver chiropractor named Dr. Terry Zachary to China. Dr. Zachary had invented "the Handmaster," a product intended for the performance of athletes, musicians, and all those who suffer from repetitive strain injury, who wanted to improve their hand strength.
The report of the chronic stimulating and exotic journey of a company-little person trying to find a Chinese manufacturer. One of the first things I recalled the story was that Dr. Zachary decided to find two manufacturers - one for the ball which is a central design feature of the Handmaster, one for the rest of the rig.It was a strategy he had developed to ensure that no infringement of its product - not a single manufacturer would have access to the entire product.
Associate Position Available in Cambridge, MA
Lydian Chiropractic:
Lydian Chiropractic is the chiropractic practice housed at the Lydian Center. We currently employ two doctors and are seeking to expand to a total of four. We are a cash-only practice with a 3-month waiting list for new patients. We have a far-reaching reputation in the Boston area, greater New England and even internationally and treat many of the most challenging musculoskeletal and neurological cases. We see patients already familiar with chiropractic as well as many patients new to chiropractic who have been referred by a healthcare or medical professional. Our patient base is highly educated and highly motivated. In addition to adults, we see families with a wide variety of special needs children (PDD NOS, high functioning Asperger’s, ADD, developmental delays, learning disabilities, attachment disorder, etc.). Our success is due in large part to our remarkably effective, cutting edge chiropractic technique: Axial Stability Method (ASM).
Position Summary:
Training Period (3-4 months):
Axial Stability Method (ASM) is the only chiropractic technique practiced at the Lydian Center. It is a combination of AK, SOT, Activator Methods and additional sophisticated energy kinesiology techniques. This is an entirely non-force technique. We do no manual manipulations. A training period of 3-4 months is expected for a chiropractor already familiar with AK, SOT, and Activator Methods. There is no expectation that the successful candidate will be familiar with the specialized energy kinesiology techniques. Learning ASM involves a fairly steep learning curve and requires a strong commitment on the part of the candidate to acquire new skills and information rapidly.
