Black bear strolls through Twinsburg: Animals in the News

TWINSBURG, Ohio -- A black bear awed shoppers and motorists in Twinsburg about 11 a.m. May 26, when it strolled through the square at Ohio 82 and Ohio 91.

The bear crossed the road and continued on its way without causing problems, said Scott Peters with the Division of Wildlife.

"Other black bear sightings are starting to increase in northeast Ohio as young bears separate from their families," he said.

Another bear was seen last week in Cortland and moved into Ashtabula County.

The Cleveland Animal Protective League's cages are full, so adoption fees are reduced Saturday and Sunday at the shelter at 1729 Willey Avenue in Tremont. Adopt two cats for $10, or one at no cost. Kittens are $20. Dogs are $50 and puppies are $100. They are vaccinated and neutered and come with a bag of pet food, a collar and ID tag. "This is the time of year when our shelter becomes overwhelmed with animals in need, and in the past two weeks, our animal intake has skyrocketed," director Sharon Harvey said. Therapy dogs
The Geauga Humane Society hosts a $125 therapy dog training seminar that begins July 10. A trainer must first screen the dogs Sunday ; call 440-285-4679 for an appointment. The seminar is six Sundays from 10 to 11 a.m. at 15463 Chillicothe Road in Russell Township.

Pizza and a movie
Munch on free vegan pizza and watch The Emotional World of Farm Animals with the Cleveland Animal Rights Alliance from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Cleveland Heights Library, 2345 Lee Road. The film is narrated by Jeffrey Masson, who wrote "When Elephants Weep," "Dogs Never Lie About Love" and the "Pig Who Sang to The Moon," and follows him as he visits animal sanctuaries across the country and talks with animal behavior experts.

Dog event
Crocker Bark runs from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, June 11 and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, June 12 at Crocker Park in Westlake. Dogs are welcome to try an agility course and the Kalahari Splash Zone. There will be free face painting, a dog fashion show, a dozen rescue groups with adoptable dogs and raffles for five Amish-made dog houses.
