World-Class Pediatric Care
Since its inception in the 1920s, Children’s Hospital has had a collaborative working relationship with VCU. By bringing the two organizations together to create Children’s Hospital of Richmond, pediatric patients benefit from a higher level of specialized care.
“Even though the original Children’s Hospital worked in close partnership with VCU, the consolidation of care into one system has allowed for a much greater depth of specialization,” says Bruce Rubin, M.D., M.Eng., M.B.A., Physician-in-Chief at Children’s Hospital of Richmond and professor and Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at VCU. “On the MVC Campus, we have more than 100 medical and surgical specialists devoted to the care of children. The Brook Road Campus also has a dedicated staff, as well as a wonderful pediatric rehabilitation facility. The combined group has more than 200 clinicians, 170 inpatient beds, a new, state-of-the-art emergency department and increased integration of acute care, inpatient care, outpatient care and rehabilitation.”
Enhancing Access to Pediatric Subspecialty CareProviding subspecialty care to children with a variety of health concerns, Children’s Hospital of Richmond offers state-of-the-art surgical, trauma and rehabilitative services, as well as access to occupational, physical and speech therapy, psychological services, a dental program, a NICU and PICU, and a well-recognized pediatric hematology and oncology program.
“Bringing these two facilities together has tangibly created an entity that has a very broad scope of services,” says Leslie G. Wyatt, M.S.N., Vice President of Children’s Services and Executive Director of Children’s Hospital of Richmond. “From a dedicated emergency department to long-term, skilled nursing care for children, we offer a wide range of services to accommodate all children’s needs.”
One of the most unique aspects of Children’s Hospital of Richmond is its staff of subspecialists who have expertise in an array of areas, including cardiac care, nephrology, adolescent medicine, minimally invasive and general pediatric surgery, bariatric surgery for adolescent patients, pediatric emergency medicine and neurology. Children’s Hospital of Richmond also provides the region’s only accredited Cystic Fibrosis Center, a pediatric sleep lab and an international adoption clinic.
State-of-the-Art Surgical CareWith an emphasis on providing minimally invasive surgical options, Children’s Hospital of Richmond offers a comprehensive array of surgical services, ranging from treatment of congenital anomalies to tumor resection and general and thoracic surgery. Surgeons operate on children of all ages and offer robotic surgery using the da Vinci Surgical System for procedures, such as resection of tumors of the chest and complex abdominal surgery, which is unique to both the state and region.
