Final leg of Flight 1549
5/26/2011 David Rehmar, left, and Christopher Cote carry a piece of US Airways 1549 at the Carolinas Aviation Museum Friday afternoon. As workers continue to pack the "miracle plane" onto a trailer for its long-awaited trip to Charlotte, significant pieces -- artifacts -- arrived this week at the aviation museum that will be the famous plane's final destination. A route has also been mapped out, avoiding the New Jersey Turnpike and Virginia because of toll booths and "Capt. Sully" is scheduled to speak in Charlotte at a museum soiree to officially welcome the plane home. Todd Sumlin - tsumlin@charlotteobserver.com
Marie Blackwell can't wait to see it. She'll find a bridge or hillside or, if she has to, stand by the road in Bluefield, W.Va., to get a look at US Airways Flight 1549, the "Miracle on the Hudson" plane, as it is trailered to a permanent exhibit in Charlotte.
"It's a part of history," said Blackwell, chief tourism booster for Mercer County, W.Va. "I'd drive to Charlotte to see it if it wasn't passing by here."
But it will be. Next Monday, the Airbus 320 will start its final trip south from a New Jersey warehouse where it's been kept, poked and prodded since it famously splash-landed in New York's Hudson River on Jan. 15, 2009.
The donated delivery, by J. Supor & Son Trucking & Rigging Co. of Kearny, N.J., will take 41/2 days. It will bypass roads with toll booths and low overpasses, said Shawn Dorsch, volunteer president of the Carolinas Aviation Museum. The museum, in a former Wachovia hangar near Charlotte/Douglas International Airport, is the plane's final destination.
The plane is expected to arrive on June 10 to much fanfare, in time for a June 11 reception attended by many of the 155 passengers and crew - the bulk from Charlotte - who survived the emergency landing. Many will be seeing the plane for the first time since they were rescued.
That night, at a fundraising dinner at the museum, Capt. Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger, the plane's pilot, is scheduled to speak.
"That plane means a lot to the passengers who were on board and survived thanks to Capt. Sullenberger's skilled piloting," Dorsch said. "Many have told me, 'if you don't get the whole plane, just get the wings.'"
The story of the "Miracle on the Hudson" is known globally. The Charlotte-bound airplane had just taken off from New York's LaGuardia Airport when it collided with a flock of Canada geese and lost power to both engines. Instead of trying to turn back, Sullenberger decided to glide the plane onto the Hudson, where passengers evacuated and lined up on its partially submerged wings before they were rescued by a flurry of ferry boats and tug boats.

Next, shadowy images of the visitors and the diorama -- which resembles a circular stage set of Venice -- will be projected onto the museum's facade along with drawings that Schmid and others will create on the spot. "The event is a form of street
