Utopia students featured in town art show
Art displays by Utopia School students filled the downtown Utopia Community Center Tuesday, May 10, with works ranging from pencil drawings to Christmas tree ornaments to photographs made with pin-hole cameras.
The results of kinder through fourth grade and sixth grade as well as the developed photos made by high school junior and senior were on display.
The high school students used black & white film in a cylinder-shaped oatmeal container to create a pinhole camera. The pinhole camera was loaded with film inside a dark room and they used a red “safe” light to see. They sealed the container with black tape and made a pinhole “lens” on the outside. They fixed a shutter with cardboard and black tape to keep the light out until they were ready to take a picture.
The printed image looked like a photo negative and then it was copied to make a “positive” print like a person usually sees.
Utopia first-grader Natasha made several projects including a Christmas tree ornament in the shape of a snowflake. She used different colored polymer clay pressed together to make her rainbow pattern.
The clays were flattened on a pan and then cut with a cookie cutter to make the shape. Raffia (decorative straw) was added so the ornament could be hung.
Another project was a picture made with white dots of paint. The students started with a kangaroo traced in dots on black paper. (The students were studying Australia at the time.) They added more dots to the paper with the back end of a paintbrush dipped in paint to create their own embellishments to the piece.
Fourth-grader Calsey drew a picture with colored pencils of her experience on a field trip to Houston.
She also made a “scratch off” drawing. The students start with multi-colored compound paper with a black covering. The students scratch off the black with a cutting tool to make lines that reveal the colors underneath. They organize the lines to make their images.
