BUFFALO, MY - I would have thought by now that everyone has a GPS unit but it remains the most in-demand father's day gift and something many people are searching for.

Why? I know many people with built-in car GPS systems who find the interface so convoluted and difficult to operate they'd much rather have a portable unit, it's often a prohibitively expensive add-on, and many other viewers I spoke to want one for vacation.

 So, here you go! Please keep in mind that these prices are not expected to last and despite tens of thousands of stock, these GPS units will sell-out quickly. As the units sell-out, you'll notice that certain models are available for store pick-up only, the prices could go up a lot higher or a model other than what I specify below can take its place.

1. Tomtom XL 350 4.3" Portable GPS for $49 down from $130 at Walmart.

2. Garmin Nuvi 255WT Portable GPS with FREE Lifetime Traffic updates at $79 at Best Buy.

I've seen this unit sold for $150-160 recently so the $79 pricepoint today is fantastic and this is one of my favorite GPS units on the market especially since it includes free lifetime traffic updates for the life of this device. 3. Garmin Nuvi 1200 Portable GPS System for $79 down from $150 at Office Depot.

I'd only buy this one if the #2 deal from Best Buy sells out or you want something really small. This ultra-thin design is pocket-size and although I found this item for $59 late last year and a deal in March for $10 less, this is still one of the best offerings on the market for a new device. Buyer's advice: if you can't afford more than $50, the Walmart deal is a great option. If you have a little more to spend, the Lifetime Traffic Updates and features of the $79 deal at Best Buy is my first choice. I've enjoyed using both units and while the interface is a tiny-bit more user friendly on the TomTom to follow (in my opinion), the Garmin units are easier to program or to input a destination.

TomTom One XL Review

TomTom One XL has a bright screen and pre-loaded maps right out of the box. It also picks up your location quickly and has built in bluetooth capabilities. The main difference between the XL and the One is that the XL has a larger screen 4.3" compared to it's predecesser at 3.5" and an option for real-time traffic via a bluetooth enabled device such as a cell phone. This unit is compact and very portable.

What is great about the TomTom One XL Gps?

The TomTom One XL has a large, bright touch screen and comes with pre-loaded maps right out of the box. This unit picks up your location quickly and has built in bluetooth. This also enables you to add optional services, like real-time traffic and weather information as long as you have a bluetooth enabled cell phone. I don't believe this service is available in the united states at this time. I also do not no if it will ever be available in the US for this device. It has a large choice of routes including the fastest, shortest, non-toll roads, highways and more. This GPS also speaks instructions very clearly.

What is not so good about the TomTom One XL?

The unit does have text-to-speech capability. Restaurants are not listed by type in the POI database. It is not easy to view contact information. The menus are a bit laborous to get through. Bluetooth cannot be used for hands free.

TomTom One XL features include, and SD card slot, which allow you add additional maps and POI.

There is a power button located on the top of the unit, which is easy to press.

The TomTom has the mini-USB power inlet/connection on the bottom.

It has a 2D and 3D map perspective as with most Gps's these days.

This unit uses an internal lithium ion battery that the manufacturer estimates will last 2 hrs, but it does include a car power adapter.

The TomTom One XL offers numerous POI like, gas stations, motels, restaurants, ATMs, beaches and concert locations. However there is no easy way to search for these locations unless you are browsing the map.

You do have the option of choosing between 55 different voices with various accents that are built in to the device.
