Three officers were shot while responding to a call on Tuesday afternoon. Officer James Ryan McCandless, 28, died from his injuries Tuesday.
Officer Nick Armstrong, 27, was in critical condition Tuesday evening.
Officer Tom Doyle, 39, was in fair condition Tuesday evening.
Flags to fly at half staffThe City of Rapid City is asking that all flags in Rapid City be flown at half staff in honor of Rapid City police officer James Ryan McCandless, 28, who was killed in the line of duty Tuesday.
Flags will continue to be flown at half staff and until one day following the date of the funeral, which has yet to be announced.
Rapid City Mayor Sam Kooiker said in a press release that the thoughts and prayers of all Rapid City are with the McCandless family and the families of Nick Armstrong and Tim Doyle, the two officers who were wounded in the altercation.
The alleged gunman in a North Rapid shootout died on Wednesday, a day after authorities say he killed one Rapid City police officer and wounded two others.
And as investigators examined the extensive criminal history of Daniel Tiger, 22, of Rapid City, sympathy and support poured into the Rapid City Police Department for the three officers Tiger is alleged to have shot.
Family, friends and law-enforcement personnel continued to mourn the death of Officer James Ryan McCandless, 28. They also maintained a vigil at Rapid City Regional Hospital for Officer Nick Armstrong, who remained in critical condition Wednesday, and spent time with Officer Tim Doyle, who was recovering from a serious wound to the face and head.
Fortunately for Doyle, the bullet hit at an angle and did not penetrate the skull, Rapid City Police Chief Steve Allender said.
"We're feeling good about his condition," Allender said. "He was taken off his feet by the shot, but it didn't penetrate. It looks very good for him now."
Allender added comments about the officers later in a Twitter comment from the hospital: "Rumor has it that Officer Tim Doyle has his sense of humor back. Nick Armstrong is a fighter.
