Sharon Osbourne's expensive rescue puppy draws PETA criticism; adopt don't shop

Beverly Hills, California -On Saturday, Holly Robinson-Peete, co-star of 'The Talk' hosted an auction to benefit her charity, The HollyRod Foundation for families with Autism and Parkinson's Disease. The hit of the evening was the bidding war over a rescue Yorkshire terrier; the winning $10,000 bid and the puppy went to Ozzy Osbourne.

Osbourne's wife, Sharon became enamored with the pint-sized canine cutie, and Ozzy was there to please. Bidding started at $5,000, but Sharon wasn't letting her husband give up.

The next day, Holly Robinson-Peete brought the adorable pooch onto the set of CBS' 'The Talk,' and shortly the Twitter account of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) stated:

It is to be reflected that PETA did not name anyone in particular, but Osbourne took personal offense to PETA's tweet and bounced back with a few of her own. Osbourne commended Robinson-Peete for auctioning off a rescue dog at her HollyRod charity event and made sure to include that the event not only raised awareness and funding for Autism and Parkinson's disease, but also found a home for a little orphaned pooch.

Worldwide, there is a critical pet over population problem. Just in the United States, statistically there are 45 cats and dogs for every human born. One out of ten dogs born never get a home, and one out of twelve cats never get a home. On average, 800 dogs and cats are killed every hour. Are these statistics enough to break your heart?

Robinson-Peete rescued a dog from a shelter who will now go on to live a posh life with animal lover and humane advocate Sharon Osbourne. Not all rescue dogs are mixed breeds; many purebred dogs wind up in shelters daily.

Worthy of Hollywood criticism, however are stars like Will Smith, Miley Cyrus, and Leonardo DiCaprio. Actors and actresses, who can mold public opinion and send the message here and abroad to adopt instead of shop are shelling out thousands and thousands of dollars to purchase teacup Yorkies, Teacup Maltese, Pomeranians, and Yorkshire terriers from a breeder in Los Angeles.

Star Yorkie Kennel, known as The Home of Teacup Biscuits sell pets bred to be the smallest of the small; Chi Chi - a "Teacup Chiwawa Pup" will weigh no more than 3.5 to 4 pounds as an adult dog. Will Smith paid $2,000 for a Teacup Yorkie this past weekend for his daughter. The kennel's 'General Waiting List' cost $250 to be included on the browsing list and entitles one to press the "Buy Now' button when the preferred puppy of minuscule weight becomes available.
