Some things in the basement were salvageable.
“It’s just one of those freak things,” Adkins said in a recent phone interview. “You know, it’s hard for me to encapsulate what it’s been like. It’s been life-altering and a traumatic experience for my five daughters and my wife and myself, too. … Every day you think about something that you’ve lost or something you want to go get, and then you think, ‘Oh. I don’t have that anymore.’
“It’s going to be a long time before the full impact is realized. You just keep plugging and looking to the future. You have to get out of that situation and just focus on what you’re going to do next.”
Next up for Adkins, a hulking mass of a longtime country star with more than 20 hits, is the album “Proud to be Here,” which will be released in early August. Adkins plays at 7 p.m. Friday at Bayfront Festival Park. Country newbie Glen Templeton opens.
The first single from the album already is on the charts. “Just Fishin’ ” is a twang-y daddy-and-daughter song about drowning worms with a pink fishing rod and talking about kittens. The young beauty, who looks like her mom, doesn’t know they’re making memories. “She thinks we’re just fishin’,” he sings.
Adkins said work on this album, produced by Kenny Beard and Mark Wright, came immediately after releasing his last album. His approach is to just keep doing what seems to work. Adkins contributes song ideas to a host of songwriters who whip up hits for the guy with a growly bass.
“We just finished the last one and started the next one,” he said. “That’s what I’ve done the past 15 years, and until nobody wants any more from me that’s probably what I’ll keep doing.”
Expect just a taste of the new stuff during Friday’s show. Adkins calls it a greatest-hits style of concert, which would mean live version of songs like “Every Light in the House,” “This Ain’t No Love Song,” “Honky Tonk Badonkadonk” and “I Left Something Turned on at Home.
