AMERICAN LEGION: Bordentown Post 26 defeats Toms River East behind slugger ...

TOMS RIVER — On a hot sweltering day at Toms River East High School it seemed that Bordentown Post 26’s Justin Howarth was one of the very few players that actually enjoyed playing in the difficult playing conditions.

The scorching temperatures didn’t effect the Post 26 slugger as he delivered the biggest hit of the game.

Howarth doubled down the left field line driving home two runs to put Bordentown up for good in the Section 4 American Legion tournament as the MCALL champs went on to down host Toms River East, 5-4, to advance in the loser’s bracket.

Now, manager Tom Dolan’s squad will square off against the winner of yesterday’s North Edison Post 324-Gibbsboro Post 371 game at noon today back at Toms River East High.

And, a win in the noon time matchup would put Bordentown into the 3 p.m. loser’s bracket final against the loser of last night’s winner’s bracket final (Mt. Laurel-Wachung Hills) for a trip to the final eight on the line.

“I love this kind of weather, the hotter the better,” said Bordentown’s Howarth, who finished the day going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI.

“I just don’t like it when my wrists get sweaty, that bothers me when I swing.

“We just needed a big hit in that spot.

There were two outs and we weren’t getting much all day and everyone was dead, so I had to wake us up somehow and I got fortunate with the ball down the line and I kept it fair and drove in two runs.

“Their pitcher (Danny Foley) was a little deceptive, a little funky.

He dropped down with a couple of pitches or he threw at your hip with others and he kept us off balance pretty good.

I thought we were going to eat him up, but he did a very good job.”

The winners jumped out in front in the second inning when they scored the first two runs of the game on a pair of errors and Post 26 took advantage with singles by Tommy Potts and a double by Rigo Morfin staking Bordentown to a 2-0 lead.

Toms River rebounded with a pair of runs in the third, however, the damage could have been worse but a perfect throw by right fielder Potts nailed Tom River’s Dave Lewis at the plate ending the rally.

After a Taylor Steen walk and single by Jake DeWitt in the fifth, it was Howarth’s drive on a 2-1 pitch just hit inside the line that scored both Bordentown runners and put the MCALL squad in business at 4-2.

William A. Cardone has announced his retirement from Toms River Regional Schools after a twenty-six year career. Mr. Cardone began as an elementary teacher, served as a Supervisor of Instruction, a Principal, and spent the last twelve years as an Assistant Superintendent in charge of the district’s twelve elementary schools.  Mr. Cardone states,” It has been my privilege to have served the students, staff and community of the Toms River Regional Schools.  I will truly miss all of the people that I have worked so closely with for these past years. I would like to thank the Board of Education for the many opportunities that have been afforded to me during my career here in Toms River.  Although I am a bit sad to end this chapter of my life, I am proud of my accomplishments and look forward to the professional challenges that lie ahead.” Superintendent Frank Roselli states, “I have had the distinct pleasure of knowing and working with Bill Cardone for more than 20 years. The most enjoyable five years of my career was when I worked with Mr. Cardone at Cedar Grove Elementary School. I have numerous fond memories of working at Cedar Grove where Bill, as the principal, created a true “family atmosphere” for students, staff and parents. Bill truly established himself as an exceptional educational leader while at Cedar Grove and his character, work ethic and educational expertise brought him to the eventual position of assistant superintendent. I wish only the very best for Bill and his family.
