Only a few feet away is a Celtic harp — a beautiful and exotic instrument. Hall is a professional harpist as well as a costumer, and she often plays for weddings, museum exhibitions, choral accompaniments, etc. She's been taking music lessons since age five, and she is the associate director of music at First United Methodist Church on Loop Road. Her 47-string concert-grand pedal harp is 6 feet tall and weighs 120 pounds. Her design shop is only a few steps away. And it's called a "shop" not a studio, I'm told — in proper theater lingo. Also, as a designer, she "builds" costumes, doesn't sew them. Nevertheless, I'm staring at a sewing machine in the shop — it occupies one end of a large work table, along with a flat metal yardstick, scissors, tape measure, a stack of patterns. Nearby are bolts of fabric, rolls of ribbon, vintage trim and notions. One of Hall's current projects is a musical revue at the Rose Theatre in Bastrop. "They'll be doing selections from plays like 'Hairspray,' 'Momma Mia,' 'Jersey Boys,' and others," she says. Hall can't disguise her admiration of and pleasure in working with area theater directors like Rose Theatre's Hal Robinson. She quickly adds the names of Cathy Airhart Webb of CA Studio and Dr. Matthew James, associate dean of the School of Visual and Performing Arts at the University of Louisiana at Monroe. Also University of Louisiana professors, Kyle T. Zimmerman and Robin Stephens, she adds. This spring, Hall created the cowboy outfits for ULM's children's musical, "Pecos Bill." She had to rummage for cowboy boots and hats, as well as invent a spiraling, mobile "tornado" costume for one character. And last year, Hall designed the costumes for ULM's "Cabaret." Whatever scale of production she's designing — with dozens of characters or only one or two — Marcy Hall brings a touch of Broadway to Monroe.
