Area warned about MoD dependence
A community facing the closure of one of its economically vital RAF bases has been warned that it needs to diversify to survive.
The Moray Economic Partnership has cautiously welcomed Monday's decision to retain RAF Lossiemouth and transform RAF Kinloss into an army base.
The announcement by Defence Secretary Liam Fox will safeguard the strong Ministry of Defence (MoD) presence in the area by replacing the RAF with Army personnel at Kinloss.
However, partnership chair Jim Royan has urged the community to break its economic dependence on the MoD to prevent a repeat of the uncertainty it faced during the UK Government's basing review.
He said: "At this time of post-announcement relief it's crucial that we don't lose sight of the job still to be done.
"Our economy must never again be as defence-dependent as it has been - we have to diversify."
Scottish Finance Secretary John Swinney met the partnership on Thursday to discuss the social and economic implications of the UK basing review.
He said: "The UK Government's decision to retain RAF Lossiemouth is fantastic news and testament to the tireless campaigning of the Moray Economic Partnership and wider community.
"While we are bitterly disappointed with the Defence Secretary's decision to withdraw the RAF from Kinloss, we welcome the announcement that the site will become an Army base.
"Working with the community, the Scottish Government made the strong case for the retention of RAF Lossiemouth and Leuchars, and we continue to work closely and intensively with all communities affected by the outcomes of Westminster's defence basing review."
