'Student, tourist visa schemes may lead to illegal recruitment'
The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration in Bacolod City is warning jobseekers about consultancy firms, internet jobs advertisements, travel agencies, persons offering overseas employment that may lead to illegal recruitment, POEA head Carmen Nagum said yesterday.
Nagus said they issued the warning after receiving complaints from applicants and workers lured to apply for an overseas job with salary rates of P50,000 to P500,000.
Illegal recruiters use various schemes like issuance of student visas that promise work after school, tourist to contract workers, visit, and other ways to entice workers to apply, she said.
“Beware, because many of the recruiters are only after the money, yet when the applicants have given the required money, no work is available,” Nagum said.
She said there is no guarantee that a student will get employment after finishing studies abroad, though they earn extra income while in school.
Applicants should also be curious if a job posted on the internet offers unrealistic and lucrative salaries and they are asked for payments through money transfer, she added.
POEA has made a checklist of the 10 don’ts on how workers can avoid illegal recruitment.
Applicants should not apply with an agency without a POEA license, and without valid and approved job orders. They should not deal with persons not authorized by the agency, she said.
She said transactions should not be made outside the registered address of the agency. If recruitment is done in the province, check if they have special recruitment authority from POEA.
Applicants should not pay more than the allowed placement fee. It should be equivalent to one month salary, except for seafarers, household workers that have no placement fees in countries like United Kingdon, Canada, New Zealand, and Guam under H2B visas, she also said.
She said applicants should not deal with fixers and payment should not be made if there is no valid contract and an official receipt. Advertisements and brochures requiring applicants to post payments at P.O. box for processing fee should not be entertained.
Applicants should not transact with agents of training centers or any travel agencies that promise overseas employment and must never accept tourist visas, Nagum added.
