Kid Safe Program teaches car safety
Get the free tools from Kid Safe to protect children in car accidents by buckling them up right.
The Kid Safe Program is an injury prevention program sponsored by the Trauma Center at Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center of Waco, in cooperation with the Texas Department of Transportation. The KidSafe Program provides services to children ages 0-16 years of age, as well as, parents, childcare givers, and the community in general. All services provided by KidSafe are FREE.
The Kid Safe Program was made to teach correct automobile safety. Texas has a law that requires children under 4’9” and less than 40 pounds to be secured in a car seat. The parent must use the seat to the manufactures guidelines and it must be installed correctly, or a ticket will be given.
“The actual car seat usage for infant car seats in Marlin is only 12%, that is a very low rate. Our program distributes 150 car seats per year in Falls County alone. The requirement to get a child safety seat is taking the instructional safety class,” said Kid Safe spokesperson Rachel Bettinger-Cooney.
The “Please Be Seated” campaign promoted by Kid Safe, was made for citizens to report cars that have unrestrained children. This is done with a post card that citizens can pick up from local WIC offices. Cards are filled out with the license plate number of the vehicle that has children riding in the bed of a truck, restrained inappropriately or not at all. Postage is paid and the address is already on it. Kid Safe will send an information packet to the address of the vehicle’s owner to help educate them on correct safety restraint.
“ This is a great program to let people know that someone is paying attention, and then they get the information they need to keep their children safe,” said Bettinger-Cooney.
Kid Safe is trying to warn the public about the dangers of buying used car seats. If the label from the manufacturer has been removed from the seat, or is no longer legible, buyers will not have enough information about the seat they are buying. Many older seats have recall notices out on it for safety, or it could be an expired model. A seat that has been in an accident is no longer safe to use. If would like to find out recall information on a seat, the website to check is www.NHTSA.gov .
“Car seats do have expiration dates, most people don’t realize that. Safety standards are updated frequently, sometimes in just two to three years. Also, people won’t know the history of a used seat, it could have been in an accident, and no longer safe for your child,” said Bettinger-Cooney.
