Diver suffers leg injuries in 60-foot Mount Waldo Quarry fall
FRANKFORT, Maine — A male who slipped while trying to take a 60-foot plunge into Mount Waldo Quarry on Tuesday was taken to the hospital for treatment of leg injuries.
“He was very lucky,” Winterport Fire Chief Thomas Doe said Tuesday night. The injuries, he said, could have been much worse, given the distance from the jumping off point to the water down below.
Doe said that the male, whose age and hometown were not immediately available, was attempting a dive when he slipped about 5:15 p.m., hitting an outcrop with his right leg and skinning his entire shin.
The injuries were not considered life-threatening and Doe expected the diver to be released from Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor on Tuesday night.
Doe said that because of the rugged and steep terrain, rescuers from the Winterport Ambulance Service had to carry the injured swimmer from the quarry down to an awaiting pickup and onto an ambulance before making the trip to Bangor. The process took about 45 minutes, Doe said.
Doe is among the local officials who are concerned about those who continue to swim at the quarry despite its dangers.
He said a steel gate and boulders have been placed at the quarry’s entrance in an effort to deter swimmers.
“People still go. It’s a bad situation. It’s what I call an attractive nuisance,” he said.
Last summer, Frankfort officials considered closing it after 39-year-old Amy Willey of Bucksport died after a 30- to 40-foot plunge.
Other deaths include those of Earl Keith in 1991 and Jeffrey Bishop in 1977, according to a Bangor Daily News story published last year.
