Towables launches Raven line of travel trailers

“Dealer response to Raven has been outstanding,” said Fred Hershberger, national sales manager of Winnebago Industries Towables.

“Every dealer has been impressed with the look that has been achieved and the price point that we’ve hit. Within the mid-profile fifth wheel market, there will not be a more competitive brand.”

The newly designed Raven line includes a high-end gel coat fiberglass exterior, increased turning radius front cap, slam-latch baggage doors, storm door, glazed cherry cabinetry, designer furniture, 30-inch deep bedroom slide-outs for increased floor space and flat “no step” floors in the bedroom, company officials said. In addition, the Raven has been designed with a maximum height of just under 12 feet with standard wheels.

“I’ve managed numerous products over my 20-plus years in the RV industry and I can state that without a doubt this is the most exciting product that I’ve been associated with,” said Ron DeHaven, product manager for the line. “We are excited to sign new dealers and show retail customers a product that is focused on them.”

Raven is available in five fifth-wheel and three travel-trailer floor plans.

There are many types and foldable trailers and just as many ways to buy or build one. Do-it-Yourself plans and kits can be bought and the trailer can be assembled as per the instructions. Or just buy one directly, either a new one from a manufacturer or a used one from a dealer.

These trailers are mainly for hauling stuff around without having to use a heavy conventional trailer or pickup truck. For instance, it is convenient when dropping off something heavy or big that won’t fit into the car trunk. Just assemble the trailer and hitch it up to the car, make the delivery and then fold up the trailer.

It can also be used for a weekend getaway, like a boating trip or camping. The boat can be hauled on a flat-bed foldable trailer and docked at the destination. The trailer can be disassembled and the car used for driving around at the destination.

On a camping trip, the trailer can be especially useful for storing all the gear and the tent. Pop up tent campers that are available in the market aren’t real foldable trailers. But a foldable trailer can be modified into a popup camper by adding slideout or flipout beds and putting the tent up to cover the trailer.

For those who want to build their own foldable trailer, DIY kits and/or plans are available from many different companies. There are different folding trailer sizes (4×8 with 8-inch tires, 5×8 with 12-inch tires, etc) and purposes (utility, flat-bed, dump trailers, etc). The biggest advantage of these do it yourself kits is the cost, which is a lot lower than buying a new trailer.

Also, it’s not really that hard to build it. Buy the DIY kit and keep a screwdriver, pliers and a few end wrenches handy. That’s about all it needs. The holes are pre-drilled so the frame can be quickly assembled and the flooring attached to it. It takes around two hours for beginners, and gets a whole lot easier/faster afterwards.
