Tree Spirits on St. Simons Island
Adorning the southeast corner of the coast of Georgia, the Golden Isles is a group of four barrier islands that form the islands of the sea and include in Jekyll Island, Sea Island, St. Simons Island and Little St. Simons Island. The largest of the four St. Simons, is a place rich in history, beauty and a good variety of nature and tourist attractions to delight all visitors.
One of the most wonderful attractions on the island is the lighthouse at St. Simons. The current lighthouse, which was completed in 1872, is the oldest brick structure in the region. It stands 25 feet from the original structure, which was built in 1807 by James Gould, who dreamed of building a lighthouse somewhere, and realized that dream after falling in love with the area around St. Simons. When it was completed in 1810, he was appointed the first lighthouse keeper by President Madison. He kept that post for the next 27 years at an annual salary of $400 until his health prevented him from keeping the post any longer. The original lighthouse was destroyed by the Confederate Army in 1862 before they evacuated St. Simons Island, to prevent Federal troops from using it as a navigational aid. The original site is still marked with ropes and an interpretive sign.
The current lighthouse was built by George Cluskey, one of Georgia's most renowned architects. There is a museum in the old light keeper's cottage, which is attached to the lighthouse. The cottage was no longer needed after 1953 when the lens was replaced by a French Fresnel lens and timers were used, eliminating the need for a keeper. There are 129 steps to the top of the lighthouse, and it is open for climbing daily. For more information, visit www.saintsimonslighthouse.org .
One popular way to see the island, if you prefer to get outside and slow things down, is from the seat of a bicycle. There are several wonderful bike paths that weave through several parts of the island and it is not unusual to see individuals or families enjoying a ride around the island. If you don't have your own bicycle, they are available to rent at several locations.
The other thing I loved about St. Simons Island was the Tree Spirits. All around the island, there are sad, mournful faces carved into oak trees, done by artist Keith Jennings in memory of the many souls lost at sea aboard ships made from St. Simons Oak.
The Tree Spirit carvings are not widely boasted tourist attraction on the island, but I found a small notation about them in a book and made some effort to ask the locals about them when visiting. Some knew of the more visible carvings around the busier parts of the village, and one directed me a bit farther out to some other, newer carvings that took a bit of effort to find.

that shuts down that transit area would have devastating repercussions for the emerging world power. But, analysts say, all sides are acting aggressively. And the dispute is happening at sea, with ships that are increasingly less restrained.
