The possibility of a local paramedic becoming a three-time cancer survivor is becoming more real.
After two previous bouts of Hodgkin's Lymphoma, 46-year-old Greg Siver is currently undergoing chemotherapy to treat Myelodysplastic Syndrome, a cancer that attacks blood cells in bone marrow.
The chemotherapy is only a temporary treatment; the cure is a bone marrow transplant.
Without a transplant, the husband and father of two would have less than eight months to live.
Siver is looking forward to the procedure for July 13, Calgary, he and his family is clinging to the hope that it will work to cure his cancer.
"I was a little happy, but now I'm kind of scared." Siver said. "Because of the finality of it, this is your last option, your last hope."
"I just think of hope," Siver wife Nellie said. "I'm not going anywhere else because if I do, I'm getting too emotional. Only hope. "
This is where the One Match Stem Cell and Marrow Network enters the picture.
The organization is actively searching for bone marrow donors for more than nine hundred patients looking for a match.
A representative of One Match is glad to hear Siver has a match, but the search for matches for the hundreds of patients looking for donors is never ending.
"A match is never easy to do; there are so many variables that come into play." Cassandra DeLuca said. "We're just really excited to hear he's found a match, and [he will] hopefully go on and live a happy healthy life."
DeLuca said the registry is constantly looking for new donors to add to the database.
Prospective donors should be between the ages of 17 and 50 years old, healthy, and willing to share stem cells with anyone around the world.
The organization is in desperate need of ethnically diverse people.
"Our key demographic [is] 17 to 25 [year-old] ethnically diverse males." DeLuca said. "Those are the ones we really need on the registry."
Signing up for One Match only takes a few minutes, and is non-invasive – only requiring a cheek swab. More information can be found online .
In the meantime, the family is counting down the days to Siver's transplant, and an end to their cancer nightmare.
"I just can't believe they're doing this for me."
Nellie Siver agrees.
"Thank you doesn't seem to be enough.

Transportation and law enforcement officials responded that they were sympathetic to Carpenter's complaints, and that they have already set up a network of paramedic helicopters to fly emergency medical personnel to any hospital at a moment's notice.

AN OFF-DUTY paramedic collecting his dry-cleaning rushed to the side of an injured motorcyclist in a two vehicle crash at Mooloolaba this morning.
Emergency services were called to the crash outside the front of Bundilla Dry Cleaners on Brisbane Road near the corner of Pangarinda Place about 9.20am.
The motorcyclist, believed to be aged in his 30s, lay in the middle of the road for at least 20 minutes being treated by paramedics before he was rushed to hospital.
Witnesses say they heard a loud bang at the traffic lights which were red in the direction of both the truck and motorbike at the time.
Brisbane Road was closed for a short time but is now reopen.
