Twitter plans an upgrade
RANCHO PALOS VERDES -- Twitter users will soon be able to post, search for and view photos directly on the social network, company CEO Dick Costolo said Wednesday at the D9 conference.
To date, Twitter has been focused on allowing consumers to post short text messages. To share pictures on Twitter, users typically upload them to another site, such as Yfrog, and post a short link to those photos on Twitter.
But in the next several weeks, Twitter will roll out a new feature that allows users to upload photos directly through its website, Costolo said. Soon afterward, the company plans to add the feature to the applications it makes for smartphones such as Apple's ( AAPL ) iPhone.
"We needed to remove the friction for adding photos," he said.
Users will be able to search for photos and videos as well. By typing in a keyword or clicking on one of the trending topics on Twitter, users will be able to see related pictures and videos that have been posted -- or linked to -- by other users.
Twitter won't actually be hosting photographs that users post. Instead, the images will be stored on Photobucket. But users will be able to post them by simply clicking a button on Twitter's site, something they can't do now.
During his appearance, Costolo declined to answer questions from Wall Street Journal reporter Walt Mossberg about whether or when Twitter plans to go public or whether the company is profitable.
Instead, he said the company's business is growing steadily. There are now about 650 advertisers placing ads on the site, up from about 150 at the end of last year, he said.
"Our business is working phenomenally well," Costolo said, adding that the company is not planning on pursuing new advertising revenue at any cost.
"We're taking our time. We want to be cautious. We want to understand how things work," he said.
In other news from the conference Wednesday, News Corp. said it will make a decision in two weeks about the potential sale of MySpace.
"In two weeks, we'll know something," Jonathan Miller, head of the company's digital media group, said in an interview.
News Corp. has said it is searching for a way to respond to MySpace's loss in market share to Facebook . The media company hired the New York-based investment bank Allen & Co. to evaluate offers for MySpace, with a goal of concluding a deal before the fiscal year ends in June, people with knowledge of the situation said in March.
