Brooks ready for the waiting game
NEWARK, N.J. — The coast-to-coast travel has ended. The party place a few blocks from the Prudential Center for family and friends is picked out. The suit, a classic light grey with a touch of lavender, is pressed and ready to go.
Now all Marshon Brooks can do is wait.
Brooks will be in the infamous green room when the NBA’s annual college draft tips off Thursday at the Pru in downtown Newark. He hopes to hear his name early, in part to ease his nerves but also to put an end to a fascinating journey that’s taken him from the suburbs of Atlanta to Providence College and Big East stardom and now to the best league in the world.
“A lot of people are coming but only about 10 or so will be at the draft,” Brooks said. “My Mom (Darlyn) has a party set up.”
Brooks has reason to be confident. While draft nights are littered with broken dreams, he’s hearing positive reaction from teams holding picks as high as ninth (Charlotte) and 10th (Milwaukee). He holds high interest from other teams, including Indiana (15), New York Knicks (17) and Minnesota (20).
“I can’t see getting past those teams. All the work has paid off,” Brooks said.
At the start of the 2010-11 college season, Brooks wasn’t even on the NBA scouts’ radar. That all changed in a senior season that saw him average 24.6 points for the Friars, second-best in the country behind Brigham Young star Jimmer Fredette. A few scouts sit courtside at virtually every Big East game but as PC’s season unfolded, the numbers grew. Brooks did his part, pouring in 43 points at Georgetown and then setting a Big East record with 52 points in a narrow home loss against Notre Dame.
Despite helping PC to just four Big East wins, Brooks earned all-league honors and earned himself invitations from virtually every NBA team for a closer look. That’s where he elevated himself from a borderline first round prospect to what he feels is a certainty.
“I think I worked out 10 times for eight different teams,” Brooks said. “Milwaukee and the Knicks were twice. It got to the point where I had to cancel some other teams (like the Celtics, who pick 25th) that were interested because teams in the top half of the draft kept calling.

If its too big you can belt it, you can wear an over-sized sweater with slim fitting jeans, you can tuck an over-sized shirt into a high wasted A-Line skirt. You can even turn a long blouse into a short sleeved blouse. Its a great test of creativity. If you really want to challenge your sense of fashion try purchasing a thrifted shirt.
