Violence has visited our community once again.

Three fatals since January.

Fifteen shootings, including five in just 10 days in May, one at Muskegon's beloved Pere Marquette Park on Lake Michigan during a holiday weekend.

Shootings seem as commonplace as the smell of mown grass or backyard barbecues, one reader told The Chronicle last week.

While the statistics are frightening, they're not out of line for the community's population. In fact, they're on the low side, according to law enforcement officials. Still, the uptick of young, African-American males resolving even minor disputes with gunplay is unnerving — and unacceptable.

Police departments and the Prosecutor's Office are working hard. Arrests have been made, prosecution has begun.

Area pastors have joined police and prosecutors to create a Social Justice Commission in an effort that includes creating programs that will provide a path to success for young people, reconnect the criminal justice system to the heart of the community and urge schools to redouble their efforts to prepare students for a better life.

And that's got to stop. Everyone in Muskegon County has skin in this game. “I don't care where you live,” Muskegon Public Safety Director Tony Kleibecker told The Chronicle last week. “The suspects are from all over and the victims are all over. This is not just an urban thing. They are in the neighborhoods.”

The entire county also will be affected by the negative image that is beginning to develop just as the county is on the verge of creating new commercial and manufacturing jobs and expanding its tourism industry. Fear of violence will be the death knell for some of these efforts, especially plans to reinvigorate downtown Muskegon and Muskegon Heights, and it will spread from there in a downward economic spiral.

Muskegon County has many social issues: illiteracy, teen pregnancy, high school graduates who aren't college ready, high unemployment. These problems need to be attacked now, but it will take hard work over a long period of time. But some issues can be addressed immediately.

So, today The Chronicle Editorial Board urges the community to step up.

We ask all elected officials, community leaders and citizens to join Muskegon Mayor Steve Warmington, Muskegon Heights Mayor Darrell Paige and Muskegon City Commissioner Chris Carter in dedicating part of their summer to ending violence by taking our neighborhoods back, an initiative so new an advisory panel is still working out the details.
