Film commission attracts activity to area

Residents walking around Waterway Square may have noticed camera crews in Crush Wine Lounge or Brio Tuscan Grille a few weeks ago, as Texas country singer Neil Austin Imber was shooting a music video for his song “Breaking Down.”

The music video is one of several film and still photography projects being worked on around The Woodlands, thanks to the work of The Woodlands Area Film Commission.

Established two years ago, the commission became a member of the Association of Film Commissioners International in June, and The Woodlands Township is a “Certified Film Friendly Texas” community, said Connie DeGuerre, film liaison for the commission.

Recently, Total Body Magazine shot its July and August cover in The Woodlands, while Proctor and Gamble filmed a commercial at The Woodlands Waterway Marriott, DeGuerre said. M.D. Anderson also shot a commercial and still images for advertisements for St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital Women’s Center in late May.

“There are so many nice venues. There’s just so much accessibility within a few hundred acres,” said Michael Walters, of HD Texas, who produced and directed Imber’s music video. “It’s almost like having a Hollywood film set.”

The music video could premiere sometime in October or November, and Walters said the crew still has more shooting to do in The Woodlands in late July and early August. Imber’s album “Livin’ on Credit, Workin’ for a Dime” contains a single that reached No. 26 on the country music charts, according to New Music Weekly.

Walters praised DeGuerre and the commission for how accommodating they were and how much access they provided.

In fact, Walters is looking to shoot another project in The Woodlands. HD Texas is in negotiations with Channel 13 for a weekly 30-minute talk show called “Mindful Living Café,” which will focus on living a healthy lifestyle and being mindful of community and world issues.

They are looking for sponsors to shoot the pilot and it could premiere sometime in the fourth quarter of 2011, Walters said.

“There’s a great deal of promise [for The Woodlands],” he said. “They really went beyond our expectations.”

Deguerre said the film commission recently attended a location expo hosted by the Producers Guild of America for the first time, and The Woodlands has since corresponded with many of the producers and companies from the expo, including Disney.

One location scout DeGuerre recently spoke with, Craig Bush, who scouted the Houston area for the film “Tree of Life,” has shown interest in bringing an “unusual project” to The Woodlands, she said, although she could not provide details.
