DA seeks death penalty in murder of Tyree Whiting
Bruce Kenneth Woods Jr., 26, whose last known address was the 100 block of Wayne Avenue, showed no emotion in Montgomery County Court Friday as prosecutors informed a judge they will seek the death penalty if Woods is convicted of first-degree murder, which is an intentional killing, in connection with the Oct. 19 gunshot slaying of 34-year-old Tyree Whiting.

After I read that column, I took a drive along nearby country roads and walked along a watershed to look for and photograph native dogwoods in the wild. I saw plenty of the trees in front yards—and many of them looked less than healthy—but I found fewer in the wild than I had anticipated. Apparently the anthracnose is killing them slowly but surely. Tragically, potentially resistant seedlings have little chance for survival in the wild where too-large deer herds browse native flora to the ground. I’m a retiree who lives at Meadow Glenn, our rural residential home near Clarksville in the piedmont region of Maryland. I love gardening with emphasis on veggies and perennial flowers, and I’m gradually reforesting parts of our lot with native trees. And while I’m gardening or mowing or just walking about, I sometimes reflect on life and what’s happening beyond Meadow Glenn.
