MP wants commission to investigate high fuel duty

A Conservative MP has called for the government to set up a commission investigating why the pump price of diesel remains high, despite recent falls in the price of oil, and examine alternatives to increasing fuel duty.

Robert Halfon, MP for Harlow, made the call during a debate in parliament yesterday after pledging his backing to the FairFuel Campaign.

Halfon says: "I made the case in the strongest possible terms that there should be no more rises in fuel duty during the rest of this Parliament. A key aim in the FairFuelUK Campaign. Petrol and diesel are necessities for everyone in my own community and for the whole country."

FairFuelUK founder Peter Carroll adds that the plan for the campaign now is to stop a proposed rise in fuel duty in January.

"This debate was just the start of a long battle in Parliament. All our recent polling quite clearly shows that the cost of fuel is right at the top of people's agenda. We urge everyone who is suffering from the effects of high fuel prices to sign up their support at www.fairfueluk.com ," he insists.

FairFuelUK is supported by the Road Haulage Association, the Freight Transport Association, Commercial Motor, Motor Transport and Roadtransport.com.

Justine Greening MP, Economic Secretary at the Treasury, said during the debate : "Prior to the Budget, I was keen to meet groups such as FairFuelUK. I will continue to do what I can to stay close to the industry, and I will work with the Department for Transport to look at an overall approach that will support our economy as well as supporting hauliers."

* UKIP MEP John Bufton has given his backing to FairFuelUK by calling for no further duty rises during this Parliament and for the government to work towards parity with European fuel duty taxation.
