Dutch style and the Dutch nation

Dutch TV ratings for football matches are extraordinary. Of course, in most countries, the most watched TV program of the year is a match of the national football team, but hardly any country, except perhaps Croatia can match the Dutch figures. When Holland played Uruguay in the World Cup semi-final, then Spain in the finals, each game has attracted more than 12 million viewers, more than three-quarters of the population. These games were by far the largest share common experiences in Dutch history.

That is why the mood in the Netherlands since the World Cup was so strange. In early September, in view of the Dutch first qualification for Euro 2012, away against San Marino, the agency Sportfive the sale of TV rights has made a discovery uncomfortable: No Dutch television channel wanted especially to buy them. No respondent Sportfive prices.OK, it was only San Marino-Holland, but it was the first competitive match played by the finalists of World Cup seven weeks after their near-apotheosis. And shows the Dutch Oranje.

In the case Sportfive did flog the rights a few days before the game, probably at a deep discount. But only 1.6 million viewers watched the 0-5 victory of Holland. Holland's Got Talent Show (in the vein of Pop Idol) that night was much more popular.

Four days after San Marino, Holland played their first game since the Soccer City, a qualifier against Finland. This was an opportunity to host the nation's heroes.Only 30,000 spectators bothered to attend. qualifier in Holland next home, against Sweden, the only other team in the severe group was not even sold by match day.

The Dutch broke the Swede 4-1, their twelfth consecutive victory in qualifying matches. It seems difficult for a small country not be proud of a team like that, and yet many Dutch feel shame instead. Older and more educated people of the Netherlands in particular, believe that players like Nigel de Jong - Claudio Gentile today - have delivered a karate kick in the chest with a great tradition.recent expulsion of De Jong on the side is a symptom of discontent Dutch. The Dutch are now engaged in a national debate about their football, but (at the risk of sounding pompous), it is also an argument of what kind of country the Netherlands should be.

I do not regret my decision, however, because despite my grand total absence of dedicated teachers and resources, it allows me to study history and politics of a much larger area - the North Caucasus Balkans, the Czech Republic to Azerbaijan, the Christianization of Kievan Rus in 988 in the bombing last spring in Dagestan. But let me assure you, it's not all ancient hatreds, and mass death! My years of study have left me convinced that, in addition to being one of the most depressing of the study, mine is also one of the funniest.I present a dozen Wikipedia pages, chosen completely arbitrarily, skimming, which I hope will give you a taste of what it means to be a REES (some of them was written in less-than-fluent English, I left unrevised). "In the first semifinal of the 2009 competition, the introduction of" postcard "leading into the Armenian performance represented, among other sights, we are our mountains, a statue located in Stepanakert, the capital of the Republic of Nagorny Karabakh, a de jure part of Azerbaijan. After a formal complaint by Azerbaijan, the video has been removed from the file for distributing the final. However, in retaliation for the presenter of Armenian voices, Sirusho, holding a clipboard with the image of the monument over her as she read off the votes, and in the bottom screen in the main square in Yerevan could be considered to display the monument. Azerbaijan's "postcard" depicts Maqbaratoshoara Segonbad monuments and symbols of the cities of Tabriz and Urumieh in the region from Iran to Azerbaijan.Armenian media complained that though Eurovision has banned the display of a monument located in the Armenian Nagorno-Karabakh region of Azerbaijan after the event, it allowed the inclusion of Azerbaijan Iranian monuments. "In 1941, the Second World War engulfed the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. Axis powers invaded in early April, and the Royal Yugoslav army disintegrated, and capitulated in just two and a half weeks. Since the former Yugoslav anthem included references to the king and kingdom, the anti-royalist supporter led by Josip Broz Tito and his communist party decided to avoid it and opted for a "Hey, Slavs" instead. After the breakup of Yugoslavia in 1991-92, while only Serbia and Montenegro remained in the federation, "Hey, Slavs continued to be used as the anthem of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.
