Decision may come soon on ‘pink building'
A passionate dispute over an old pink building on the side near the West could be resolved by the City Council this week.
Plans to demolish the building at 1312 St. Maldonado Guadalupe has created a classic problem of conservation-vs.-progress.
In March, the city's historic and Design Review Commission voted 5-3 to begin the process of designating the historic property because of its cultural significance.
Built in early 1920 and subsequently amended and expanded, the building served many functions like a traditional business family with a dwelling at the rear, and is said to have been a center of political activity in early the Hispanic community in the mid-1900s.
But since 2004, structure 2750 square feet, also called Casa Maldonado and the "pink building" was occupied by pigeons.
The Commission voted 7-1 zoning last week to oppose the landmark designation after considering whether the measure would "prevent or significantly modify" a plan to redevelop the site with a 21,000 square foot building for training and personal development of commercial space and retail.
