Dads Den army helps
When relationships break down fathers are often separated from their children and a sense of isolation.Fathers on the Mornington Peninsula now have access to a range of resources to the distressed dad dad Den Tyabb Community Hall.
Mornington Peninsula Shire Councillor Reade Smith, the driving force behind the den, "said his own experience of marriage breakdown has led to helping others.
"I've been through ups and downs and I know what I could do better. Often, people want answers, they just want to share."
Papa's Den volunteers have set up a center in Tyabb style apartment and work on projects, including a kitchenette. "Blokes come around and we all sit down, we do not expect anything, you can talk about what you want."
Cr Smith said that following the media coverage last month of Michael Fox, who hung banners in favor of custody of the father on the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the local den had received an unprecedented number of calls phone.
Stepmother and new friends are often a forgotten part in programs to support families and they hoped to build facilities to meet for them too, Cr Smith said.
Facilitators can refer fathers to local emergency shelter, legal advice and other resources.
