Bicycling offers many advantages (take poll at right)
Do you have an old (or not-so-old) bicycle parked in your garage, gathering dust and spider webs? What better time to re-introduce yourself to the pleasures of bicycling than a warm spring day in Idaho?
Today is national Bike to Work Day, and with temperatures expected to climb into the mid-70s, we couldn’t have asked for better weather to utilize some pedal power. And next week, May 22-28, is Nampa Bike and Walk Week. See the schedule of events for a list of planned activities.
There are many reasons why making bike riding a regular part of your life if such a great idea:
• It saves money on gas. Unless, of course, you relish the opportunity to spend $4 a gallon on petrol. Would you rather have that money to spend on something fun, or give it to futures traders, oil companies and despotic regimes?
• It will help keep those unwanted extra pounds off. Imagine getting a great workout without needing to spend money on a gym membership.
• Bicycles don’t pollute the air. That means fewer emissions, and if our air quality is good for a while, maybe we can ditch those pesky emissions testing requirements.
• If you drive your vehicle less, it lasts longer. Less wear and tear, fewer repairs and servicing bills, etc.
Cycling is a great habit to get into. If you do, remember these safety tips:
• Wear a helmet
• If you’re going to ride at night, make sure you have a headlight so you can be seen.
• Get a lock so your bike won’t get stolen
• Watch for cars everywhere, including driveways and parking places. Don’t assume drivers will see you. Always ride defensively.
• Ride near the right-hand edge of the road.
• Yield to pedestrians and follow traffic controls.
• Check your tire pressure before each ride and make sure your tires are properly inflated. It’s also wise to carry a pump with you in case you get a flat.
If you don’t have a working bike, this would be a good time to consider making the investment. Discover the advantages of getting around on your own power. It’s also a lot of fun.
Nampa Bike and Walk Week schedule
Sunday: Belle District Criterium, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Downtown Nampa. It’s billed as “NASCAR”-style bicycle racing.
Monday: Mayor’s ride, 3 to 5 p.m., Nampa City Hall. Take a recreation-paced ride with Mayor Tom Dale through parts of town, with stops for refreshments.

The Legends' Golf Classic: The five-man shotgun format will tee off at 8 am June 10 at Centennial Golf Course, Nampa. Hosted by the Northwest Nazarene University Crusader Athletic Association. Proceeds go to athletic scholarships at NNU. Call 467-8876.

Practices and games will be held at Skyview Park. All players will receive a T-shirt, cap, certificate and a medal. Players must meet the minimum age requirement on or before June 15, 2011.
