CALHOUN There was food, golf, laughter and education Friday as dozens of coaches gathered at the Southern Pines Golf and Country Club's Pine Hills Course clubhouse Friday for the annual Bayou Jamb Coaches Clinic and Golf Scramble.
Coaches and representatives from about 10 area middle and high schools attended the clinic, which was sponsored by the Louisiana National Guard and featured LSU head football coach Les Miles and retired NFL strength and conditioning coach Al Miller.
But as educational as the early portion of the day was, most coaches turned out for the physical activity that is, they gladly headed outside for a putting contest and a golf scramble.
Delhi Charter coach Brett Raley took the short game victory, beating out Oak Grove coach Vic Dalrymple in the finals before Dalrymple and West Ouachita coach Joey Pender teamed up as the loudest duo on the course, both accusing the other of cheating his way through the tournament.
Miller, a member of the 2003 inaugural class of USA Strength and Conditioning Hall of Fame, opened the clinic at 10 a.m., speaking to the coaches about general and specific physical preparation for athletes.
"All athletes start here," Miller said of what he called GPP. "These are your body weight exercises squats, chins, dips, pushups, sit-ups. ... You have to go from very simple to complex. If you're not teaching technique and being a stickler 100 percent of the time, you're hurting the kids."
Miller, who worked in the NFL for more than 20 years before retiring to Monroe, said West Monroe defensive coordinator Jerry Arledge is as good a technique coach as he ever has seen, especially when it comes to strength training, or SPP.
Those specific physical preparation exercises are squat-and-snatch, clean-and-jerks, plyometrics, bounding, short max springs and more.
Miller emphasized avoiding overtraining to keep players from getting injured, and he said every player's strengths and weaknesses must be identified before the workout process even begins.
"Kids are very task oriented," he said. "If they see someone else ahead of them doing something, they're going to want to do everything in their power to be able to do it, too. ... No matter the sport, you have to be able to run. Speed is it. You run every day."
Miles entered the room with West Monroe head coach Don Shows after Miller was finished speaking and the group had hamburgers for lunch, and the LSU head coach immediately walked over to Pender's table to chat with coaches he has met several times in his recruiting trips.
