Adaptive Surfing Helps Physically Disabled

JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla. -- About 40 people who normally wouldn't be out enjoying the water Saturday took to the waves at Jacksonville Beach for some fun in the surf.

The "They Will Surf Again" event helped empower some of Florida's physically disabled.

Going beyond the limitations took about 200 volunteers and some great weather and waves.

One participant, Fernando Garcia, said surfing changed him forever.

"Getting out here to surf is a tremendous opportunity for anybody who's been out here. It's changed my outlook on being disabled. Tremendously. There's no barriers that we can't overcome," Garcia said.

Another surfer, Amanda Perla, said she definitely had fun in the waves.

"Just got out of the water, definitely caught the biggest wave so far. Really fast, got to be out there with my uncle and my dad, so it was a bunch of fun," Perla said.

The event is a joint effort between Brooks Adaptive Sports and Recreation and the Life Rolls On Foundation.

While the physical activity is certainly part of this, there's something even more important than the action in the water. Brooks' Alice Krauss said these types of activities will help people realize their potential.

"This is an activity that looks a lot like a physical sport. But if you look around at relationships, the social and emotional aspect, it's great. Helps people live beyond their disability," she said.

Genesis Group designed and permitted the first Traditional Neighborhood Development in the City of Jacksonville. The overall project encompasses approximately 350 acres and includes 1,563 dwelling units at a gross residential density of 5 dwelling units per acre. A mix of housing types is provided, including single-family detached units, rowhouse multifamily units, and second story apartments above town center shops.

In addition to residential uses, the approved plan proposed 205,700 SF of retail uses, 245,400 SF of office uses, and 34,300 SF of public and civic uses. Residences, shops, workplaces, and civic buildings are located in close proximity and reinforce the identity of the neighborhood development. The design also incorporates physically defined open spaces in the form of plazas, squares, greens, and parks to provide places for formal social activity and recreation.
