City seeking supporters for fireworks
It’s getting down to the wire for the 2011 Newton Fireworks display and organizers are still seeking funds.
On Friday, the city’s park commissioners — the group in charge of raising money for the annual display — put out an e-mail seeking more contributions for fireworks.
So far, only about half of the show’s cost has been raised.
“There is no money in the city budget for Fourth of July fireworks,” the e-mail notes. “Past years displays have cost $8,000. So far we have raised about half that amount.But the more pressing issue is we need to sign a contract with a ‘Shout Team’ in order to reserve one for July Fourth. We need to pay in full when we do.”
Organizers are hoping to raise the remaining funds as soon as possible.
“I personally think it’s important that we put on the fireworks show,” Newton Mayor Chaz Allen said.
It is possible, Allen noted, that the city could help bridge the gap if there’s a shortfall of funding, at least until the full $8,000 is raised.
