With its latest Tecra introduction, Toshiba set out to make its business line of laptops thinner, lighter, and longer-lasting—without sacrificing durability. And, indeed, the Toshiba Tecra R850-S8530 is thin and light for a 15.6-inch desktop replacement, though greater portability lies with Toshiba’s Portégé line. For desk-bound workers, however, the Tecra R850 makes a serviceable and—dare we say—stylish desktop replacement. Its unique, corduroy-patterned case looks great, particularly for a business machine, and feels reassuringly solid.
Underneath, the Toshiba Tecra R850-S8530 offers a second-generation Intel Core i5 processor that offers excellent application performance and helps the laptop achieve outstanding battery life. The laptop also features the AMD Radeon HD 6450M graphics processor, which doesn’t turn it into a gaming monster but delivers 1GB of video memory for your graphics pursuits. Overall, this is a very strong business package, priced perfectly for its performance.
DesignThe Tecra R850 comes dressed in business black. It features a plastic chassis, but instead of using an ordinary ABS plastic enclosure, Toshiba developed a high-resin plastic for the case, which it calls a “fiberglass reinforced chassis,” that is thin and durable. On many plastic laptops, particularly larger models like this one, where there are large expanses of plastic, worrisome flex is often felt on the lid and keyboard deck. But the Tecra R850’s case feels very rigid. It’s also textured in a corduroy pattern on the lid and wrist rest, giving the laptop a unique yet still boardroom-friendly look.
In addition to its pleasing appearance, the Tecra R850 is also pleasantly thin and light. It weighs only 5.4 pounds, which is less than other 15.6-inch laptops such as the Dell Latitude E6410 and HP EliteBook 8560p , both of which top the 6-pound mark. It’s also lighter than the popular 15.6-inch ThinkPad T520 , which Lenovo lists as starting at 5.57 pounds. The Tecra R850 is also a hair thinner than the Dell Latitude E6410 and the HP EliteBook 8560p; they measure roughly 1.3 inches thick while the Tecra R850 is 1.2 inches thick at its thickest point (along the back edge) and 1.1 inches thick along its front edge. While you aren’t likely to travel with a 15.6-inch laptop on a daily basis, no matter how thin and light it is, the Tecra R850 is still no bulky, boring business system. And its sleekness does not come at the expense of durability.
