Local stars don dancing shoes to raise money for association

Similar to the show, each local celebrity has been paired with a professional dance partner, provided by The Ballroom Dance Center, and is responsible for learning a ballroom dance routine to be performed in front of a live audience.The dancers will be scored by a celebrity panel of judges on common ballroom competition judging criteria, including posture, timing, hold, poise, presentation and entertainment value.
The 2011 celebrity cast of Dancing Stars of Augusta contains Abu Khan, Amy Winn, Angela Hillesland, Austin Rhodes, Deanna Brown-Thomas, Don Bailey, Julian Osbon, Mary Linda Chambers, Sean Frantom and Terra Carroll. Proceeds of the event will benefit the Georgia chapter of the Alzheimer's Association.
Each dancing pair is also responsible for raising a minimum of $5,000 to benefit the Alzheimer's Association. Each dollar raised by the celebrities counts as a vote, and Lexus Mirror Ball Trophies will be awarded to the winners. The People's Choice Award will be presented to the dancer who raises the most individual dollars, and the Judge's Choice Award will be given to the dancer with the highest scores.
The dancers have been hard at work perfecting their routines since March, said Emilie Tobias, the owner of The Ballroom Dance Center. Tobias and her staff selected dances that best suited the personalities of each of the celebrities and their attributes as dancers, she said.
"As a team, we selected a variety of 10 dances that would suit the contestant as well as make a good show. The choreography was actually done by a team," Tobias said. "It's been so much fun. I really wish the cameras had been rolling the whole time. We have laughed, we have grown, we have grunted.
"The contestants are hardworking and dedicated and excited about this opportunity to promote the cause raising money for the Alzheimer's Association."
Like the contestants on the ABC show, the local celebrities "are smitten with a newfound passion for dance, but also really impressed by the amount of work and training that goes into getting a dance number ready," Tobias said.
When asked to participate, Deanna Brown-Thomas, the president of The James Brown Family Foundation, knew she wanted to be involved because her grandmother, Ruby Loretta Jenkins, died in April 2010, after having Alzheimer's disease. Brown-Thomas will be performing a saucy salsa.
"I wanted to do this in memory of my grandmother," Brown-Thomas said. "You don't know life without them until they're gone. It's such a strong void in my life when she passed because she was very instrumental in helping me raise my son. My son was her first great-grandchild.

I hate to be a downer, but dancing is one of the most competitive art fields out there. If you’re not naturally talented at it, it will take a LOT of work to succeed, and even then you may never achieve the level you want to be at.
Of course, that’s no reason to stop dancing. If you enjoy it, then by all means get doing it. I just wouldn’t pin all your hopes and dreams on going pro. If you really love it, I would suggest aiming to open your own studio and teaching other people how to dance.
