Top of the global IPv6 To Mark Day

Communications Minister Ed Vaizey mark today's world IPv6 day by a meeting with key industry figures to discuss progress on the transition to the new protocol. Each device that connects to the Internet has an IP address composed of a string of numbers. Internet Protocol version 4, the system currently used, provided about 4.3 billion addresses, which have almost been exhausted. IPv6 uses longer sequences of numbers and therefore create billions more addresses. The government supported the creation of 6UK, a nonprofit organization that aims to help the smooth transition to IPv6. "We must ensure that we create conditions that allow the Internet to continue growing and for companies to produce fresh innovations," said Mr Vaizey. "IPv6 is the key to the continued growth of the Internet. It is focused on the industry with the passage of the front there is an impact on the Internet. I look forward to hearing from the industry the work already done on this crucial issue."In February this year the last blocks of IPv4 addresses have been allocated to regional agencies that distribute them to businesses and users. World Day of IPv6 is intended to educate the public and large organizations, including Google , Facebook and Yahoo will use IPv6 for the day.

BMA comment Speech by the Prime Minister on the reform of the NHS

Chairman of the British Medical Association (BMA) said the Prime Minister's speech on reforming the NHS in England. Following criticism from professional health services, the Prime Minister has defined "real changes" to controversial plans to reform the NHS in England. To "support the integration" of services, hospital doctors and nurses will be involved in the care commissioning, with GPS, and regulators. Dr Hamish Meldrum, chairman of BMA, said: "It is encouraging note that many of the concerns about the bill that the BMA has repeatedly raised were taken on board. However, as always, it will change the reality that is important. The Prime Minister's speech suggests that He is committed to integrating the NHS, and the participation of a wider range of staff in their design. However, he also spoke glowingly about the benefits of competition, and reminds us of the harmful effects of many application in the NHS has had so far.

ISP Column - June 2011

I have just attended the 62nd RIPE meeting in a classic spring week in Amsterdam, and I'd like to share my impressions of that meeting.

I've also had the opportunity to attend the ARIN North American and Caribbean Regional Registry meeting a couple of weeks ago, and certainly there is a distinct difference in the way these two communities meet. Unlike ARIN meetings, where the substantive part of the meeting concentrates relatively exclusively on discussion of current address policy proposals being considered by that community, the RIPE community have directed much of the minutiae of the group discussion of policy proposals to their address policy mailing list, so the meeting has more scope for plenary presentations and in those presentations the individuals preparing the program have considerable scope to consider the broader set of current topics in the Internet. For me that broader scope makes for a stimulating and interesting meeting!

So the first aspect of this meeting that I should note is that it's now commonly understood by this community that its highly likely that by the time of the next RIPE meeting at end of October the RIPE NCC will have handed out all of it's remaining pools of IPv4 addresses. In some ways there was an air of fin de siècle at this meeting.

IPv6 Discussions

This meeting, not unsurprisingly, much of the plenary presentation material was devoted to IPv6. There were a number of areas of focus within this topic, including dual stack transitional technologies, CPE dual stack devices, and the forthcoming World IPv6 Day.

Much of this material would be very familiar to anyone who has been following this topic in recent months, and, in general there was nothing presented at this meeting that one could claim was truly breaking news to any active following of the progress of IPv6. Although, having said that, I really have to note Gert Döring's regular report on the IPv6 routing table. He invariably manages to find truly fascinating artefacts about IPv6 in the BGP routing data!
