Sacramento Public Library will be offering many free concerts and programs inspired by American Sabor: Latinos in U.S. Popular Music, a traveling exhibition from the Smithsonian that presents the musical contributions of U.S. Latinos from the 1940s to the present, exploring the social history and individual creativity that produced stars such as Tito Puente, Ritchie Valens, Celia Cruz, Carlos Santana and Selena. The variety of free programs include Latin Jazz concerts, dance demonstrations, film screenings, art displays, and other Latin cultural programs and are scheduled at several Sacramento Public Library locations.
Wednesday, June 8, 7 p.m.: Pete Escovedo Latin Jazz Orchestra Pete Escovedo is viewed as one of the standard bearers of Latin jazz. His orchestra is considered one of the finest ensembles in Latin jazz, playing a joyful concoction of Latin rhythms with elements of jazz, R & B, and funk that is hard to resist. Limited seating is on a first-come basis. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
Saturdays, June 11, 18, and 25, 2 p.m.: Latin Rhythms Film Series Latin Magic Dance Band led by Peter Castanon specializes in Latin dance music. The band has opened for such well-known acts as Pete Escovedo, Tito Puente and others. Their music is energetic and moving with a Latin spirit and soul that moves people to the dance floor. Limited seating is on a first-come basis. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
Saturday, June 25, 3:30 p.m.: Cuentos y Cantos (Story and Song) with Quinteto Latino An all-star revue of veteran musicians who contributed to the sounds, styles, and music associated with the 1960s and ‘70s throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. The band brings a mix of Latin Rock, Soul, Funk, and Jazz and represents the diversity of musicians of the era. Limited seating is on a first come basis. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
Wednesday, July 13, 2 p.m.: Victoria Mendoza Dancers! This family program features bilingual award-winning children’s author, musician and performer Jose-Luis Orozco. His performance is filled with singing, learning and Latino flavor that motivates children to learn about the Spanish language and the rich tradition of Latin American children’s music. The Victoria Mendoza Dancers will open the program with a Mexican folklore dance presentation.
Saturdays, July 16, 23, and 30, at 2 p.m.: Latin Rhythms Film Series Manuel Romero sings for sold-out crowds enthralling them with current top 40 hits, melodic mariachi music, and ballads in both English and Spanish. Limited seating is on a first come basis. Doors open at 1:30 p.m.
