Tuesday State News Briefs: Two from Shawano killed in traffic accident

SHAWANO - Two people from Shawano were killed on Memorial Day in a one-vehicle crash just south of their hometown.

49-year-old Steven Collins and 41-year-old Kelly Collins were both thrown from their vehicle, and they died at the scene. Shawano County sheriff’s deputies said their SUV was going north on Highway 22 when it lost control on a curve, and overturned several times in a ditch. Neither victim was wearing a seat belt. The crash happened around 5 a.m. yesterday.

Authorities plan to scale back their search for an Upper Michigan man missing since last Thursday in the Menominee River on the Wisconsin-Michigan border. 48-year-old Mark Geib of Wallace fell into the river while fishing on the shore about five miles north of the cities of Marinette and Menominee. Sheriff’s deputies in Michigan have suspended diving operations. But they were planning daily patrols of the river, and they asked people to watch for Geib. Marinette County officers have also been helping in the search.

The body of a UW-Whitewater student was found yesterday at the base of a limestone quarry where he apparently fell from a ledge. Walworth County authorities hope to learn more about the incident after an autopsy is performed today on 20-year-old Mark Wegener. He was a junior at Whitewater and was from the town of Merton in Waukesha County. Authorities said he was last seen leaving a party near his apartment in Whitewater about one a.m. on Saturday. Relatives reported him missing later that day. Wegener’s body was found about 7:30 yesterday morning at the quarry located just outside the city. Foul play is not suspected, based on an initial investigation.

A Waukesha man found dead on Gibraltar Rock near Lodi has been identified as 29-year-old David Hoelzer. Columbia County authorities are still trying to figure out what happened, but they do not suspect foul play. Hoelzer’s body was found Friday abut 100-feet below the crest of Gibraltar Rock. The bluff is about 200-feet tall, and there’s a hiking trail that goes to the top. It’s located in a state natural area in the town of West Point.

Today is the deadline to get onto Wisconsin’s next do-not-call list for telemarketers. More than two-million state residents have their home-and-cell numbers on the no-call list – but they have to re-register every two years. Those who forgot when they signed up last can do it again now, just to be safe. Telemarketers will get an updated no-call list on July first. About half the numbers on the previous list in April were from cell phones. Getting on the no-call list will reduce your sales pitches, but they won’t eliminate them altogether. Political candidates can still call – and so can those with whom you’ve done business in the past. And there are still lots of telemarketers who just ignore the no-call list. It was the number-one consumer complaint in Wisconsin last year. Several larger calling firms were charged – and violators face fines of up to 100-dollars a call. Here’s the number to call to get on the no-call list – 1-866-966-2255. Or you can register online at NoCall-Dot-Wisconsin-Dot-Gov.

Auntie B's Wax: In The Shade Of The New Canopy

Three months before that there was a canopy malfunction at one of my outdoor shows.  I bought that canopy second hand from a woman who had done shows for a number of years but had to quit due to physical limitations.  I'm not sure how long she owned it, but was nice to think of me and offer her entire setup for a very reasonable price when I decided to hit the road with my crafty biz. Back to my mantra, I decided to bite the bullet, do the research, and purchase a brand new canopy.  Because of the very long winter and terribly wet and mucky spring we couldn't set it up until this past weekend.  (And seriously, if you buy something like this be sure to set it up ahead of time to make sure all the parts are included and it isn't damaged.  You don't want to find surprises when you're "on.") The best part about this canopy is it comes in a really nice carrying case.  The entire set-up weighs at least sixty pounds so it's nice to have a caddy with wheels.  The carrying case also has arm straps so you can carry it on your back if necessary.  Yeah, like I could wrangle that on my ever-so-delicate (haha) self.  Of course Husby had to prove his mightiness and show how easy it is to lug this thing around backpack style...
