Ernie Kilby finds equine dentistry to be a stable career move
FREDERICK, Md. -- The Arabian mare, a grand dark chocolate and cinnamon mix, rose up on her hind legs to protest the approaching stranger.
She thrashed her head from side to side.
She was flustered and vulnerable -- a 20-something mother-to-be, the only pregnant horse here on the Rushing Winds Rescue Farm.
Eight hundred anxious pounds.
Nonetheless, the horse dentist from Windsor walked up to her quietly and confidently to soothe her jangled nerves.
He reached in and tugged on the metal brace around her muzzle.
She reared again, and he backed away.
He waited.
He slowly led her around her stall.
"It's OK," he said, patting the horse's neck.
She steadied and relaxed.
Then he turned her head and slid the course filing tool into her mouth.
Ernie Kilby's intriguing mid-life career change has become his most unique gift and has revealed his most important work.
It's as if he can talk to the animals.
* * *
For three decades Kilby raised his family, cared for his handful of horses and worked various supervising jobs in manufacturing.
His specialty was electrical, but he could build just about anything, even his house.
However, things suddenly changed nearly seven years ago when he said his Emigsville company, Harmony Products Inc., cut him in a downsizing move.
He was 52 and out of work.
"I thought, 'What the hell am I going to do? It's always surprising when you're that experienced and can do a lot of good and yet ..."
Nine months and 300 resumes later he still wasn't sure. He had only one interview.
Kilby was told he was "too old and unmarketable."
"Like any other over-the-hill person I felt useless. I knew I wasn't. I had capabilities. I knew I wouldn't fall down -- I just had to find out where to pick myself up at."
This was much different from the early 1970s when unemployment was soaring and he was a young man looking for work. He took whatever he could get. He had everything in front of him.
This time meant nearly a year of doing odd jobs and looking for a break. His wife worked full-time, but there still was strain financially and emotionally.
There were depressing days, weeks, months.
"Your self-worth goes down tremendously," he said. "It was like, 'How can they say I'm not worth anything,' you know what I mean?"
Even now, six years later, he still shakes his head at the way things finally came together.
