Wrangler Million Dollar Tour marches on at Redding Rodeo
The northern California city of Redding hosted the Redding Rodeo, a Silver Tour stop on the Pro Rodeo Cowboys Association ( PRCA ) Wrangler Million Dollar Tour ( MDT ) on May 19-21, 2011. The MDT is composed of 25 total rodeos -- 9 designated as Gold stops and the rest Silver. Money won at Tour rodeos helps contestants as they try to qualify for the Justin Boots Playoffs in Puyallup, Washington and the Justin Boots Championships in Omaha, Nebraska, both slated for September. Only the top 24 in money earned in each rodeo event will make the Puyallup stop and just 12 of those will move on to Omaha.
Prize money at both championship events can make or break a cowboy's season, helping him earn a berth at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in December in Las Vegas or even a PRCA World Championship.
Redding represents the 10th stop of the 2011 Tour and the last before the busy summer season kicks off in June. Several contestants took advantage of the rodeo to improve their chances at qualifying for the Playoffs.
Three Redding Rodeo Champions entered the weekend unranked in the MDT standings but used big wins here to vault into contention. Leading the pack is Clayton Foltyn, a former WNFR qualifier (2005) who makes his home in El Campo, Texas. Foltyn won the bull riding at Redding with a huge ride worth 92 points aboard War God of Growney Brothers Rodeo . The $4,532 check moved Foltyn to 25th in the Tour standings. Foltyn is amongst the top five in the race for the world championship.
Winnemucca, Nevada cowboy Matt Marvel is looking for his first WNFR qualification in fourteen years as a pro. He has been close several times and is hoping that a berth at the MDT Championships can help pave the way. Marvel made a big move in the MDT standings with his victory in Redding. He topped Growney Brothers' Billy the Kid to tie 2009 World Champion Jesse Kruse with identical 83 point rides. Kruse rode Four Star Rodeo's Boogie. Both men collected $3,575.
Marvel jumped from outside the standings to 27th with the win. Kruse was already ranked fifth but moved up two notches.
Rhen Richard is better known on the PRCA circuit as a heeler in the team roping but in Redding, he made his mark in the tie down roping. The Roosevelt, Utah cowboy has been gathering up all around championships for several years and has knocked on the door to the WNFR in the team roping as well.
In Redding, Richard roped and tied two calves in 17.8 seconds for the victory. He won $2,637 and moved into the top fifty in the MDT standings.

Smith was ranked 39th in the MDT standings prior to Redding and left ranked 18th. Smith hails from Cross Plains, Texas and made one trip to the WNFR in 2009. Perhaps no event is shaping up to be more exciting than the steer wrestling.
