Brownsburg grad Storen wowing NL in 2nd season

Meet Drew Storen

» Hometown: Brownsburg.

» Age: 23 (turns 24 Aug. 11).

» Pro background: Second year in major leagues as a relief pitcher with Washington Nationals. . . . Was drafted No. 10 overall by the Nationals in 2009 draft. Rose through the system quickly in 2009, combining for a 2-1 record, 1.95 ERA and 11 saves in 28 games in stops at Hagerstown (A), Potomac (High-A) and Harrisburg (Double-A). . . . Pitched in 13 games combined at Harrisburg and Syracuse (Triple-A) in 2010 before joining the Nationals. He pitched in 54 games with Washington and posted a 4-4 record with a 3.58 ERA and five saves. . . . This season (through Thursday), he is 3-1 with an 0.38 ERA and nine saves.

» College: Storen was one of the top closers in the country in his two seasons at Stanford (2008 and '09), finishing with a 12-4 record, 15 saves and a 3.64 ERA. . . . Was first-team All-Pac 10 Conference both seasons.

» High school: Was dominant in four seasons at Brownsburg, finishing with 30 wins, 319 strikeouts and a 1.55 ERA for his career. Was a Louisville Slugger first-team All-American as a senior, posting an 8-1 record with an 0.89 ERA and an 86-to-8 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 55 innings. Was drafted in 34th round by New York Yankees out of high school but didn't sign.

» Tough outs: Storen paused several seconds when asked the toughest hitter he has faced so far in the big leagues. "I've had a lot of tough at-bats with guys," he said. "A game last year against (Indiana native and Dodgers shortstop) Jamey Carroll was probably the toughest so far. It was a 14-pitch at-bat and he eventually got a hit. But part of the fun is that battle."

» In the city: Storen was in New York on Tuesday visiting Dave Letterman's studio. No, he wasn't appearing on the show, just checking it out. "It wouldn't be a bad career goal to make it on there, though," he said.
