Ridley Township's new ordinance is for the birds (and horses, pigs and others)

The new ordinance addresses a situation in which a micro potbelly pig escaped from its owners in the Leedom section of the township a few months ago and wound up at the police station. The pig was shipped off to a farm in Reading before the owners arrived to claim their pet. They were told farm animals were not allowed to be kept as domestic pets within the township. The new law addresses the keeping, transportation and handling of reptilian species not prohibited as pets. One condition laid down in the law will require reptilian species be contained within habitats designed to prevent escape. They cannot be handled openly in public places unless the handler is conducting an educational meeting, or is demonstrating a reptile for sale within a commercial animal establishment. Any captive reptile secured by, or forfeited to the township shall be released to a zoo, humane society or reptile rescue organization....”or euthanized at the discretion of the township police or code enforcement officer.” Exemptions to the ordinance include a humane society or animal park, a veterinary hospital, clinic or office, animals sold at pet stores recognized as domestic pets as defined in the law. Violations and penalties, seizure and injunctive relief are spelled out in the ordinance. Anyone violating the ordinance could face a fine of up to $1,000, plus court costs.
