Largest US indoor water park worth the drive
One snowy February evening, desperate for a couple days in a tropical environment, but unwilling to burn up a week's vacation and spend $1,500 to fly the family to Florida for spring break, I decided to look online at area indoor water parks.
I'm well aware there's one right on upper Peach Street and, trust me, we love Splash Lagoon, but I wanted to get the heck out of Dodge, if you know what I mean.
Friends recommended Kalahari Resorts in Sandusky, Ohio, the country's largest indoor water park. After clicking around its website ( www.kalahariresorts.com ) and seeing slides and family raft rides like nothing to be found on Peach Street, I booked a one-night (two-day) stay in April for my husband, me and our daughters, 7 and 9.
Because we didn't plan on spending much time in the room, I chose the cheapest one, a Hut room, which was $220 on the Thursday night we stayed. (Note that prices vary widely depending on what night you go, package deals, peak times, etc.)
The cost of the hotel room included four tickets to the water park for the day we arrived (starting at noon) until the water park closed the next day (10 p.m.). So, conceivably, we could be there from noon on Thursday until 10 p.m. on Friday for $220 (though we had to check out at 11 a.m. on Friday and put our stuff in the car).
It didn't exactly work out that way, but do vacations with kids ever go according to plan?
And ... go!
We arrived just after noon, and I expected a long, painfully slow registration line. It was neither. In fact, I've never checked into any hotel that fast in my life. And even though check in wasn't until 4 p.m., our room was ready, so we were able to get unpacked and settled before we hit the water park. Bonus points for Kalahari right there.
Our room was far, far away, but it was nice with a fridge and microwave. We also had a patio with a door to the outside that made it easy to bring all of our gear in.
We suited up and headed down the hall for some water fun.
First impressions count
Impressive. Huge. Packed.
It was spring break, and Kalahari was at capacity. It was crowded, and we expected that. On the bright side, we got a good look at the water park as we wandered through all 173,000 feet of it looking for a place to put our stuff. Eventually, we commandeered a chair, dumped our gear on it and hit the wave pool.
It was the first time any of us had been in a wave pool. We could not stop laughing as we clung to each others' inner tube handles as we were tossed and rocked to and fro.
