1921 - Sears loans the Upton Machine Co. $87,500 to build a larger manufacturing plant so it can build more washers. Sears agrees to cancel the loan in exchange for shares of stock in the Upton Machine Co. 1948 - The Nineteen Hundred Corp. successfully launches the first Whirlpool brand-name automatic washing machine, transitioning the company from a manufacturer with one major trade customer (Sears) to launching its own branded appliances. Dual distribution - one line of products for Sears, another for the Nineteen Hundred Corp. under the Whirlpool brand - begins, fundamental for future growth. 2010 - Net sales grow to $18.4 billion. Whirlpool announces plans to invest $85 million to build a new riverfront office complex in downtown Benton Harbor and renovate other facilities in St. Joseph, Benton Harbor and Benton Township, announces plans to close its manufacturing plant in Benton Harbor, the only remaining Whirlpool factory in Michigan, debuts the $500 million Harbor Shores development and opens the World of Whirlpool in Chicago.
