Biltmore Hotel welcomes Oklahoma City show dogs

Dogs that will be staying at the state's largest hotel are part of 2,000 pampered and primped competitors expected at the 8th Annual Summer Classic Dog Show running through Sunday in Oklahoma City .

The dogs and their human companions, valets, caretakers and mentors — sometimes referred to as owners — are coming from across the United States . A few canine connoisseurs are even traveling from Canada and Mexico , said Holly Million, board member of the Oklahoma City Kennel Club and a lifelong dog show person.

“They'll come from everywhere if they feel they have a top dog,” Million said.

Some travel to shows almost weekly. “Some people spend a couple thousand a month,” said Million, who travels to about a dozen a year.

Why do they do it? Not for the money, Million said. For one thing, there isn't any, unless you count the gift certificates awarded in some categories. They do it, Million said, “for the love of the breed.”

There is plenty of love to go around at a show of this size, since, at last count more than 150 breeds are expected, she said. “We keep adding more.”

Every show breeder has his or her story. But they usually begin the same way, with that love thing. For Million, hers began when she was growing up in McAlester surrounded by family pets, including Dobermans, Airedales and schnauzers. “We always had a dog.”

Million met someone who showed dogs and decided that was for her. But it took a while before she could afford the dogs and the facilities to care for them. Today, Million, 55, a radio advertising saleswoman, lives with her eight soft-coated wheaten terriers on an acreage in Jones.

Despite their often coifed and fussy appearance, many show dogs aren't just for show. Some are working herders, hunters, trackers, service dogs, even ratters.

“Mine actually are farm dogs,” Million said. “They will herd, they will hunt.” One wheaten terrier that Million gave to a niece was even taught to protect.

In a class consisting mostly of law officers and their large German shepherds, the niece asked if an officer would don the padding and pose as an attacker for her terrier to practice. One guy agreed, sniffing at the thought that the fluffy 40-pounder might muster much of a challenge.

“He takes off and he knocks that guy to the ground,” Million said.

But otherwise, show dogs, along with their human counterparts, are the perfect guests, as hotelier Kuziej will attest. Besides this week's big show, the hotel hosts numerous breed-specific groups for other shows during the year.
