Earl Weaver baseball was one of the first computer baseball games to focus heavily on providing a good baseball simulation first, and a good arcade experience second. The game’s instruction manual included baseball management advice from Earl Weaver himself, and the game forced you to think about things like lefty/righty splits, monitoring your pitcher’s fatigue level and getting someone warming up in the bullpen when necessary. Pitchers required rest between starts, and injuries happened occasionally.

You could override any aspect of the baseball simulation that you wanted if you preferred a pure arcade experience, and indeed, the game was plenty of fun if you merely wanted to square off against a friend. It was the managerial depth of Earl Weaver Baseball that gave me my first insights into serious baseball strategy as a child, though.
