Car strikes bus bench, killing woman

SAN DIEGO, June 5 (UPI) -- A car careened out of control and slammed into a bus stop in San Diego, killing a 25-year-old woman and seriously injuring her son and boyfriend, police said.

Police said the 71-year-old driver apparently suffered a medical condition causing her to lose control of her PT Cruiser, which slammed into a bus bench where the victims were sitting Saturday evening, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported.

The 10-year-old boy suffered a broken arm and cuts to his back and head. His mother was taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital, where she died. Her boyfriend was taken to University of California-San Diego Medical Center with multiple fractures of his legs and feet.

The driver, Jean Chizer-Williams of San Diego, was hospitalized for treatment and observation.

Police officer Dan Wall said the woman and boy were not carrying identification.

A security camera mounted nearby showed two adults and a boy sitting on the bus bench. The man got up to look down the road when he saw the car jump the curb and head straight at the sheltered bench.

Wall said the man tried to get out of the way, but the car struck him and the other victims.
