Sycamores win MVC outdoor track title

The Sycamores entered the final day in third place and didn’t win a Sunday championship — getting victories on Saturday from Major Clay in high jump and Dustin Betz in steeplechase for their only individual conference titles — but caught leader Southern Illinois with just one event to go and finished third to SIU’s fourth in the 4x400-meter relay. “Every point counted today,” said women’s coach Angie Martin. “We went back and forth with Missouri State all day and didn’t secure fourth place until the final event. The girls really worked hard and fought well all day long. We have a great group of younger girls who will be moving up and be very competitive in the years to come.” The men’s critical 4x400 race came down to a quartet of freshmen — Max Tuttle, Jonathan Jackson, Brad Adams and Keenan Johnson. They were comfortably ahead of Southern Illinois all the way and nearly won the race, being overtaken by Illinois State and Wichita State on the final straightaway. They had a season-best time of 3:12.83, with Wichita winning at 3:12.34 and Illinois State second at 3:12.77. Also in the 100, Justin Baxtron was sixth in 10.82 and Terre Haute North graduate Shaun Smith eighth. Baxtron was sixth and Kevin Piraino seventh in the 200, Corey Hahn sixth in the 800, Shakamak graduate Drew Gambill eighth in the 1,500, Albara Escalera seventh in the 5,000, Michael Roberts fourth and Maurice Lyke eighth in high hurdles and Tuttle fourth and Ray Skaymay fifth in intermediate hurdles.
